Danny Roese

Danny J. Roese 84 of South Bloomfield, OH, passed away Friday, March 29th, 2024 surrounded by his family.  He was born on July 12, 1939, to the late Jarold Raymond and Bessie Mae (Maupin) Roese of Millport.  He was a graduate of Ashville-Harrison H.S. Class of 1957.  Danny went into the U.S. Army in 1956. He served 17 years of active duty and 16 years of reserve duty. He completed two tours of duty in Vietnam. His first as a Communication Specialist with the 5th Special Forces Group where he was awarded the Bronze Star w/Valor and the Combat Infantry Badge. His second with the 123rd Aviation Battalion Group as a Cobra Attack Helicopter Pilot. During this tour he was shot down and received the Purple Heart Award. Danny received the Air Medal and Air Medal w/Valor for valorous actions in the Republic of Vietnam and numerous other awards and commendations.  He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 2 on July 12, 1999.  In 2007 he was inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame as one of Ohio’s Hero’s for his Bronze Star with Valor. After his service to his country, he worked for many years and retired with the U.S. Postal Service.  Danny finished his work life driving a semi truck for Walmart.  Danny was an amazing man of God and was a member of the Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. 

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Ruth A. (Neff) Roese and daughter-in-law Stephanie Lynn Roese. Danny is survived by his children, Danny L. Roese (Emily Dickey) of South Bloomfield, Jarold “Chip” (Donna) Roese of Grove City, and Angel Roese (Richard Dean Johnson) of Columbus; brother Mike (Sonja) Roese; 7 grandchildren; Seth (Rachel) Roese; Theron (Misty) Roese; Kirstin (Bill) Sullivan; Matthew (Jordan) Roese; Chase Chaffin, Ashley and Caleb Stepp; 12 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and many special friends including Cheryl Kuehn and Trace Croel.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 6th with Funeral Service at 1:00 p.m. at Oliver-Cheek Funeral Home, 420 W. Roger J. Holbrook

February 27, 1936 - September 23, 2023
Cincinnati, Ohio | Age 87

Roger Joseph Holbrook, 87, died on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at his home in Kenwood (Cincinnati). He was born on February 27, 1936 in Haverhill, Ohio to Mary Elizabeth (Wheeler) Holbrook and Joseph Holbrook. Roger served in the United States Army for 20 years in the Special Forces (Green Berets) as a HALO parachutist and an advisor to the Special Forces Operations & Intelligence (MOS) unit. During his time in the military, he served four tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor, the Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

MSG Holbrook received his honorable discharge from the Army in 1976 and had a second career with the Defense Investigative Service, United States Department of Defense, as a Special Agent in the Columbus, Ohio Field Office. He was a founding member and inaugural class inductee in the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor in 2000 at the Ohio Statehouse, and served as an Emeritus Board Director. Roger was interviewed by the Veterans History Project of the United States Library of Congress in 2016. He was a devoted husband to Ann for 63 years, a great father, and a wonderful "pop" to his grandkids. He loved the Ohio State Buckeyes and was an outdoorsman and avid bow hunter. He will be remembered for his wry sense of humor, quick wit, and kind heart.

Roger was preceded in death by his mother Mary, father Joseph, sister Janice, and brother Charles (Chuck). He is survived by his loving wife Katherine Ann, his son Jeffrey, daughter-in-law Amanda, beloved grandchildren Jane and Alexander, nieces, nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law, and numerous family members and dear friends. Visiting hours will be held for Roger at Harrison-Pyles Funeral Home, 11623 Gallia Pike, Wheelersburg, Ohio on Friday, September 29, 2023 from 11 AM to 1 PM. Edward M. Eppick

April 8, 1942 - Novemvber 13, 2022
Westerville, Ohio | Age 80

Edward M. Eppick of Westerville, OH passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2022 at the age of 80, following a lengthy battle with cancer. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Joan; daughters Jennifer and Melany (Mark), and son Ed (Pam); grandchildren Justin (Jackie), Andrew (Andrea), Rachael (Alex), Noah, Emily, Megan, Mackenzie, and Colin. Edward was preceded in death by his sister Donne, brother-in-law John, and parents Edward and Alma.

Edward was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1942 and graduated from St. Joseph High School. In his youth, he was a school photographer, cross country runner, boxer, trumpet player, and skydiver.

Edward enlisted in the Army in 1964 and trained in Bad Tolz, Germany, where he learned to ski in the Bavarian Alps. Edward was deployed to Vietnam in 1966, where he served as a Green Beret communications sergeant in the Army's 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne). During his tour he served as a member of a covert operations team responsible for rescuing American prisoners of war. Among his military awards and decorations are the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with device 1960.

Edward and Joan were married in 1967 and he began his career as an insurance salesman. While working full-time and taking care of his family, Edward attended night school at Akron University, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Finance. He operated an insurance agency for many years before transitioning into the trucking business. Edward enjoyed attending Vietnam veterans’ reunions, often with his son Eddie. Edward had a great love for fishing and enjoyed taking his boat on the lakes of his brother-in-law's farm. Most recently, he enjoyed feeding the birds, chipmunks, and squirrels that visited his patio daily.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, November 18 at 10:30 AM at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 313 N. State Street, Westerville, OH. Dominic J. Hall

August 23, 1989 - September 4, 2022
Appleton, Wisconsin | Age 33

Dominic J. Hall, a Catholic man, answered God’s call home and peacefully passed September 4, 2022 surrounded by his loved ones.

Dom, 33, was a man among men.  He was a loyal servant, a genuine friend, a compassionate son, and a steadfast brother.  He persevered and excelled in all that he set forth to do.  His calm, confident demeanor made everyone around him feel invincible and safe.  With Dom by your side you could take on the world with ease.

Dom was born on August 23, 1989 to Joseph and Bonnie (Champeau) Hall in Fond du Lac. Brother to Desiree (Michael) Stockov (Hall) and Trevor (Whitney) Hall.  Dom graduated from Xavier High School in 2008.  During his high school years he heard the calling to join the service.  Immediately following graduation he answered his calling by joining the United States Marine Corps.  

He was united in marriage to Jacole, -The Love of His Life- Hall (Vande Hey) on December 27, 2014 and was a devoted Father to his two sons, Victor and Thorin (ages 4 and 2).  Dom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer May 28, 2021, during his entire battle Dom remained humble, as the stoic masterpiece that he is and each day he would give up his sufferings to those oppressed, struggling with pregnancy, and for the sick to be healed.  He would pray the rosary each day and felt a strong connection to the Blessed Mother Mary.  “Something Beautiful is going to come from this, I just know it.”  You could often hear him say.

Dom was a sworn Officer and SWAT member with the Appleton Police Department.  During his time at Appleton Police Department he received the life saving award from Appleton Police Department for providing medical aid to a suicidal man. Prior to joining the Police Department Dom served in the United States Marine Corps for four years as a Force Reconnaissance Marine where completed a combat deployment to Afghanistan.  He completed two deployments: one as a member of the 31st MEU and another as a member of Operations Enduring Freedom where he received Combat Action Ribbon and the Navy Achievement Medal with Valor.  Dom left active duty in the Marine Corps and then served in the Ohio National Guard as a member of the 19th Special Forces Group, where he served as a Special Forces Weapons Sergeant where he once again completed a combat deployment to Afghanistan.  During deployment with the Army he received a Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge.  He had a humbled boldness to him and was a true man of service.

Robert "Bob" W. Lucas

June 9, 1942 - June 10, 2022
Pemberville, Ohio | Age 80

Bob Lucas was born to Kenneth and Edna Lucas on June 9, 1942, in Bellaire, Ohio, the second of four children. He died at home in Pemberville, OH, June 10, 2022.

Bob grew up on the family farm in Centerville in Belmont County, OH. He sustained a lifelong love for this part of southeastern Ohio. Going home was a through line in his life and each visit eagerly anticipated.

Realizing early that farming would not be his desired career, he attended The Ohio State University, completing his degree in Finance at Capital University in Columbus, OH. A personal highlight was serving as a page in the Ohio Senate 104th General Assembly in 1964. He later achieved an advanced degree at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University in NJ.

At the age of twenty Bob enlisted in the Army 2d Special Forces Group, ultimately becoming a member of the successor 2nd Bn, 11th Special Forces Group and retiring as Command Sergeant Major. Bob served for 34 years and completed over 150 parachute jumps and traveled the North American continent to train for the unit’s Cold War Mission.

Concurrently Bob embarked on what became a 30-year banking career with Huntington Bank, NA. His roles included co-founder and president of Huntington Leasing Company, president of Huntington Bank of Toledo/Northwest Ohio, executive director of Community Banks for the State of Ohio and president of Huntington Mortgage Company.

Across his dual careers in the military and banking, Bob accepted leadership positions for numerous philanthropic endeavors in Toledo and Columbus, including the United Way of Greater Toledo, serving as the 1989 Campaign Chair and, later, board president. Following his retirement from Huntington, the United Way moved to recruit him for a 5-year position as president, tasked by the Board with realigning the organization's businesses practices.

A deep and abiding love of Ohio and its rich history propelled Bob to serve 9 years on the Board of Ohio History Connection (formerly The Ohio Historical Society), becoming chairman of the board in 2016. In this role, he personally visited each of Ohio's 59 unique Ohio History sites, often urging his fellow Ohioans to do the same. On June 9, 2022, the executive committee of the Ohio History Connection awarded Bob the rare honor of Life Trustee. Bob was the driving force behind the dedication of an Ohio Historical Marker for the remembrance of 17 paratroopers and air crew that died from a midair plane collision during an airborne training operation in southern Ohio.

Bob was a man in motion. He had a passion for airplanes and was an instrument rated private pilot and owned several single-engine airplanes. This paired well with his equally strong passion for Triumph vintage sports cars of which he owned many over the years.

Not surprising, he also loved to travel. Retired from the Army, he and his wife, Karen, had the military privilege of traveling Space Available designation on military aircraft to destinations around the world. Doing this he logged over 45 exciting Space A trips which he considered exhilarating, as often the final destinations could change rapidly prior to takeoff and, sometimes, even mid-flight.

Bob was a 35-year member of The Toledo Club and proud member of the men's morning workout group, the Great Books Club and, occasionally he dabbled in Yoga classes.

He was sustained and now survived by his beloved wife, Karen; cherished daughter, Robyn Bachelor (Paul); adorable grandchildren, Casey, Josie and Abby; and very special stepson, Vesper Williams III (Laura); brother, Thomas (Brenda).

Bob was an exemplary husband and loving partner, father, brother, son, grandfather, colleague, friend.

His final wish was to return his remains to the highest point in Belmont County, once part of the Lucas Family Farm.

His family extends heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Northwest Ohio for providing care and comfort to Bob and those he loved during his final days.

A Celebration of Bob's Life will take place on Thursday, August 4, at 10 am at The Toledo Club, 235 14th Street, Toledo.

Terry T. Dillon

July 25, 1945 - December 8, 2021
Sunbury, Ohio | Age 76

Terry T. Dillon, age 76, passed away after a hard-fought battle with service-related cancer on December 8, 2021, in his home in Sunbury Ohio. He was the first son of six children to Taylor and Letty Dillon. Terry attended Mt. Sterling High School, Mt. Sterling, Ohio. In 1965 enlisted in the Air Force to be trained as a Firefighter/Crash Rescueman. He was stationed with the 1604th Air Base Group Bermuda, U.K. then subsequently deployed in 1967 to the 14th Air Commando Wing, Nha Trang Air Base during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Viet Nam National Gallant Cross ribbon with Palm. Thirty days before deployment to Republic of Viet Nam, Terry married the love of his life, Donna Jean Sigler and after deployment, returned to the states to continue his education in fire science and a family life.

Terry’s civilian career steadily expanded in knowledge and responsibility from apprentice Firefighter in 1969 - Fire Instructor, 1972, - Bomb Technician, 1978, - Advanced Explosive Investigations, 1985, to finally Fire and Arson investigations, 1986. Terry retired from the Columbus Bomb and Arson Squad with 35 years of service (Military and Civilian) January 2000.

While holding his firefighter position, Terry enlisted again but this time with the US Army Reserve Special Forces in 1972. Continuing his tactical Military Education with the 11th Special Forces Group (Airborne) required completing Army Infantrymen (11B) Basic Airborne Course, Combat Explosives Demolitions Engineer (12B), Special Forces Engineer Sergeant, (18C), Psychological Operations Specialist, (37F) US Army Special Operations Intelligence Sergeant (18F), Jump Master Course, Special Forces Senior Sergeant (18z), Long Range Reconnaissance Course. He progressed through the ranks from E-4 Specialist in 1972 to Command Sergeants Major in 1995.

Terry’s last deployment and culmination of an accomplished and decorated career was in support of Task Force Falcon KFOR 6-A (Kosovo) July 2004 to March 2005. He retired from his last assignment of CSM 37th Brigade Combat Team OHARNG, October 2005 with 40 years of military service.

Terry and Donna moved from Columbus to the rural area of Sunbury, Ohio where they had two loving daughters. There they built a house on a wooded plot and raised the girls in fresh farm air away from the congestion of the city. He enjoyed teaching the girls how to camp in the woods and going on fishing trips, later he would revisit the same adventures with his grandchildren.

Robert "Bob" E. Deis

April 26, 1940 - June 19, 2021
Columbus, Ohio | Age 81

Robert “Bob” Eugene Deis, 81, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on June 19th, 2021, surrounded by his loving family and beloved dog, Sassy. Bob was born April 26, 1940, in Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from Chaminade High School in Dayton and The Ohio State University.

Bob enlisted in the Army as a Combat Engineer, and he joined Company D, 2nd Battalion, 11th Special Forces Group Airborne following his initial active duty assignment just three years after the 11th SFG(A) was activated.   Bob completed airborne training, the Special Forces Demolition Sergeant Qualification Course, and Mountain Warfare School.   He earned his commission through O.C.S., and then completed the Engineer Officer Basic Course, the Special Forces Officer Course, and the Jumpmaster Course.  He was a detachment XO and commander.

Bob’s adventurous civilian career included serving as a Deputy in the Franklin County, Ohio Sheriff’s Department and the Ohio Division of Wildlife in wildlife and fisheries management.  He earned the State Championship of Ohio Law Enforcement in Pistol Marksmanship in 1972, and he was the captain of his department’s pistol team when it won the 1975 Championship during the Ohio Sheriffs’ Association Marksmanship Competition.  During his later years, Bob was a commercial real estate broker and property manager. He was a private pilot and enjoyed hunting and fishing all over North America.

Bob’s passion with the outdoors began early; he has an Eagle Scout, and as a Scouting Volunteer, he advised hundreds of scouts as they made the journey to become Eagle Scouts. Bob served in numerous Scouting roles over the decades and was distinguished with the District Award of Merit, National Eagle Scout Outstanding Eagle Scout Award, and the National Silver Beaver Award.  

Bob was an active member of SFA Chapter 45 in Ohio.  He volunteered for and managed chapter membership and regularly volunteered to support chapter fundraising events. 

Bob is survived by his separated wife Joyce Deis and ex-wife Linda Deis, his children, Cynthia Deis (Galen Gillett), Nancy Cropper Burns (Mike), and Christopher Deis (Melanie) and seven grandchildren.

Charles “Charlie” G. Mohr

June 5, 1938 - January 8, 2020
Cincinnati, Ohio | Age 82

SGM(R) Charles “Charlie” G. Mohr, 82, passed away on 8 January 2021 in Cincinnati, OH.

Charlie was born in 1938 and raised in the Cincinnati area.  He enlisted into the US Army at the age of 18 with a strong desire to become a paratrooper.  He completed Basic Training at Ft. Knox and was then assigned to the 44th Tank Bn.  He transferred into A Co. 2nd Airborne Battle Group of the 505th Infantry Regiment and attended Airborne School at Ft. Bragg in 1957.  He would complete Jumpmaster School while serving in Germany. Upon returning to the US, he was assigned to C Co., 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Division.  In April of 1961, Charlie entered the US Army Reserves where he served for 25 years.  He spent time with D Co., 2nd SF and C Co., 2nd Bn, 11th SFG(A).  His awards and decorations included Army Accommodation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Master Parachutist Badge, Sharpshooters Medal, and German Airborne Wings.

Charlie was an active member with the SFA Chapter 45, often attending monthly meetings in both Columbus and Cincinnati.  He also attended the SFA National Conventions quite often.  He will be missed.  Charlie was employed for over 40 years with the National Distillery/Jim Beam Company. He enjoyed roller skating, golfing, skiing and shooting his M1 at the range.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 57 years, Judy; son Charles; daughter Pamela; and 6 grandchildren.  Funeral services were held at St. Matthias Catholic Church in Cincinnati.

Clyde I. Morrison Jr.

June 10, 1938 - January 2, 2021
Middletown, Ohio | Age 82

MSG(R) Clyde Morrison passed away on 2 January 2021 in Middletown Ohio age 82. He is survived by his wife, Anna, whom he was married to for 57 years, son Lynn (Monica) and daughter Tammy (Derrick), Grandsons Kevin, Matt, Jason, and Granddaughter Angel, and five great grandchildren.

Clyde’s active military service was from 1955-1979. MSG(R) Morrison served in the 11th SFG(A), 101st Airborne (Vietnam 1965-66), 82nd Airborne, 5th Special Forces Group (Vietnam 1968-69), as a Drill Sergeant, and Army Recruiting Command. Among Clyde’s many awards and decorations was the Bronze Star Medal for Valor.

Clyde went on to work for the US Postal Service as a mail carrier. He was a member of SFA Chapter 45 in Ohio.

Michael H. "Mike" Quinn

November 26, 1928 – December 1, 2020
Dublin, Ohio | Age 92

MAJ(R) Michael “Mike” H. Quinn, 90, passed away on 1 December 2020 in Dublin, OH.

Mike served with the 2nd Special Forces, the predecessor unit for the 11th Special Forces Group.  His awards and decorations included Expert Infantry Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, and Special Forces Tab.

Mike was an active member with the SFA Chapter 45, attending meetings as his health would allow him.  Mike was instrumental in the chapter’s dedication of the Ohio Historical Marker established in 2018 for the tragic mid-air collision of two C-119s during an airborne operation in Wilmington, OH on 18 April 1964.  The accident claimed the lives of 17 Airmen and SF troopers.  Mike was a unit member and served on the accident’s investigative team.

Mike is survived by his wife Jeanne; brother Richard; 11 children; 22 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.  Funeral services were held at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Marble Cliff, Oh.

Thomas R. Payne

August 5, 1947 - May 1, 2020
San Antonio, Texas | Age 72

LTC Thomas R. Payne, age 72, of San Antonio, Texas passed away May 1, 2020, at the Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital in San Antonio. He was born on August 5, 1947, in Bronxville, New York to parents, John and Mary Mabel (Shannon) Payne. On March 12, 1972 he married Doris "Beth" E. Holton in Ft. Gulick, Panama Canal Zone.

Retired LTC Payne proudly served his country as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Legion of Merit and the recipient of the Bronze Star among the many distinguished decorations and medals he received during his 27 years of dedicated service to his country.

In addition to his dedication to the U.S. Army, Thomas was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His three grandsons were his pride and joy, and he their greatest fan. Thomas enjoyed attending each activity they were involved with, whether it was choir performances, school plays, and their many sports activities. When he was not watching his grandson's playing sports, he enjoyed sitting on his porch and enjoying the view of his backyard. Thomas was also an avid fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Payne; and siblings, Mary Jo Haddon, Mary Pat Brodie, Che Payne and Marty Chaudon. He is survived by his loving wife, Beth; children, Nicole Negrete and her husband, Eloy, and son, Ross Payne all of San Antonio; grandchildren, Julian Alvarez, Enrique and Mateo Negrete; brothers, Jim Payne and Joseph Payne both of Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews and other loving relatives.

Funeral services will be private.

He was the former Executive Officer for Charlie Company 2nd Battalion, 11th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

John E Zastudil

December 24, 1935 - April 9, 2020

CSM John Zastudil, 84, of Brimfield, Ohio & Riverview Florida.

John retired from the US Army/Special Forces (Green Beret) after serving 35 years and reaching the rank of Command Sargent Major. He also was a member of the Mason’s. Retired from Ford motor company after 42 years.

John traded in his DD214 for a set of heavenly wings. 

John and his wife Marian of 60 years loved to travel.  They visited 49 states and numerous countries.  Often visiting Marian’s hometown in Munich Germany.

John is survived by his loving wife Marian. 3 children Cindy (Larry) Dumire, Robert Zastudil & Terry (Dave) Easterling. 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Due to the Covid-19 virus a Military service and celebration of life will be determined at a later date.

Gary Dale Miller

Gary Dale Miller, age 68, of Hamden, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2020, at the Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe, Ohio.  He was born February 11, 1951 in Pikeville, Kentucky to the late Billy M. Miller and Wanda Neva Jo Coleman Miller.  Gary was a 1969 graduate of Wellston High School, and continued his education by attending Capital University.  Following over 20 years of service, Gary retired from the United States Army.  He was a former contractor, and for several years, he was part owner, along with his wife, of Michelle's Place in Hamden.  Gary was a former councilman for the village of Hamden and was a member of the American Legion Post 371 of Wellston and a lifetime member of the AmVets.  In his spare time, Gary always enjoyed building and tinkering around on different projects.  He is survived by 2 daughters, Morgan Cremeans (Eric) of Westerville and Jessica Kehler (Garrett) of Frederick, Maryland; granddaughter, Mackensie Bell; siblings, June Waugh (Fred) of Jackson, Billy Miller (Pam) of Westerville, Belinda Fox (Willie) of Jackson, and Andy Miller (Betty) of Wellston; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ed and Linda Maerker of Hamden; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.  Besides his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Michelle Dutcher Miller in 2017.  Calling hours will be Tuesday, February 4, 2020, from 5 to 8 P.M. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston.  Funeral service will be Wednesday, February 5, 2020, at 11 A.M. at the McWilliams Funeral Home with Pastor Andy Rawlins officiating.  Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Hamden Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions in Gary's memory be given to Folds of Honor Central Ohio Chapter, 545 Metro Place South  Suite 100, Dublin, Ohio 43017.  Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.mcwilliams-funeralhome.com.

Norman Lambert

MAJ(R) Norman Lambert, 88, of Galloway, OH passed away on 20 October  2019. Norm first entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1947 at the age of 17, as a communications specialist.

Norm served in the Korean War with the 1st Marine Division between 1951 and 1953. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. After recovering from his wounds, Norm served a second tour in Korea and was wounded in action again and received his second Purple Heart and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his valorous actions in the defense of an outpost that was overrun during a night attack by Chinese forces.

After the Korean War, Norm separated from the U.S. Marine Corps, but missed the military life and attempted to reenlist in the U.S. Marine Corps, but he was told that they were not taking any married men. He enlisted with the U.S. Army.  Norm attended Airborne School in 1963 and then went on to complete the Special Forces Qualification Course.

Norm served in the Vietnam War with the 5th SFG(A) and was awarded again with the Bronze Star Medal for Valor.  He returned for a second tour in Vietnam with the 1st Bn, 502nd Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division.  He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for saving the lives of two of his patrol members who were wounded and trapped in a minefield.  He made two trips through heavy enemy fire and the minefield to rescue them. Later during this same tour, Norm earned his third Bronze Star Medal for Valor.

After completing Sergeants Major Academy Norm was asked to teach battlefield tactics at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point. He taught classes from 1977 to 1978. He taught the first  classes which had female cadets. When he was ready to retire as a Master Sergeant the school asked him to apply for a reserve commission. With a recommendation from LTG Poindexter he was commissioned at the rank of Major.

After military retirement, Norm taught as an Adjunct Professor for Columbus State Community College. He also taught and was assistant principal at Grove City High School for over ten years and earned the Assistant Principal of the Year award for the State of Ohio in 1993. Norm was a member of the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame and the Ohio Military Hall of Fame for Valor.  He also served as Historian for Ohio’s chapter of the Tuskegee Airman and served as President of the SFA Chapter XLV from 2007-08.

Norm spent his summers traveling Europe collecting photos, paintings, letters and other artwork from the World Wars.  He is survived by his wife, Joyce, his son SGM(R) Richard, sisters Myra and Yvonne, grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Kraig Leon Johnson

SFC (Retired) Kraig “KJ” Johnson, 18E and former member of both 2/11th and 2/19th, age 53 passed from cancer quietly and peacefully on 25 August 2019 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Kraig started his military career by serving with the 82nd Airborne Division. He graduated from the
SFQC in 1993 and served with 11th SFG(A). Kraig was later deployed to Kosovo and Kuwait
with ODA 955. Many friends and family attended his burial at sea.

He had an early sunrise memorial service and burial at sea in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, on Friday, 30 August 2019.

Thomas Allman

Thomas “Tom” Allman, 81, of Coshocton passed away Sunday, March 24, 2019 at the Morrison Hospice House in Zanesville. He was born in Coshocton on September 18, 1937 to the late Charles R. and Helen L. (Stitler) Allman.

Tom graduated from Coshocton High School and went on to serve in the National Guard and the United States Army as a Special Forces soldier. After serving in the military he went on to work for Cyclops (AK Steel) for 39 years before retiring. He was a member of the Special Forces Association-Chapter 45, American Legion, Coshocton Gun Club and the Sportsman’s Club. He loved to shoot guns, hunt, and spend time outdoors. He also enjoyed helping the 4-H with their shooting events.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Beck) Allman, whom he married November 14, 1959; children Scott (Christina) Allman of Plantation, FL and Sarah (Phil) Hague of Inverness, FL; grandchildren Brandon Davis of Inverness, FL, Nicholas and Zachary Allman of Plantation, FL; sister Susan Riggle of Coshocton; and brother David (Liz) Allman of Coshocton.

Christain L Redkey

SGM Christian L. Redkey, 79 years, of Hillsboro passed away on Thursday February 22, 2018 at Mt. Carmel East in Columbus, OH.

He was born in Dayton, OH on March 9, 1938 the son of the late Christian & Edith (Pollard) Redkey. Besides is parents he is preceded in death by one daughter Karen Redkey.

Christian was a 20 year veteran of the United States Army having achieved the rank of Sargent Major, and served in the special forces and the green berets. He was also a veteran of the State Highway Patrol in Lima, OH and was an active member of the community, being a member of the Hillsboro VFW, the Special Forces US Army Association #45 and volunteered with Shriners hospital.

He is survived by his wife Linda (Knoff) Redkey, who were married on June 21, 1992; as well as by his son, John Redkey of Columbus; two stepsons, Michael (Jean) Clifton of Columbus, Jason (Jessica Meier) Clifton of Columbus; daughter, Susan (Jim Kusan) of Columbus; sister, Rita (Robert) Jones; Mother-in-law Gloria Knoff; eight grandchildren, Nick (Joellen) Robins, Miles Clifton, Kathryn Grace Clifton, Taylor (James) Klausman, Christopher Clifton, Lucas Clifton, Taylor Kusan, and Kara Kluxton; six great grandchildren, Jamie Hively, Hailey Hively, Kiley Hively, Wyatt Kusan, Brynlee Wahl, and Ava Klausman and friend, Barbara Redkey.

Services will be held on Tuesday February 27, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro. A burial will follow at the Hillsboro Cemetery with military rites provided by the Highland County Honor Guard.

James E Cermak

James E Cermak "Jim", age 71, of Worthington, Ohio, passed away, October 6, 2018, at home. Jim served with the 11th Special Forces Group A and retired from Dublin City Schools. He also taught at Columbus State Community College, trained poll workers for Franklin County Board of Elections, and served as a stadium usher at The Ohio State University football games.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, step parents, a brother, and infant sister. He is survived by his wife, Kay; daughter, Mona Swartz (Chris); son, James (April); eight grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; a brother, George (Alison) Cermak; and step-brother, Bobby DeVault.

Jim was a graduate of Adena Local High School, Wilmington College and The Ohio State University. Jim was a member of Orange Friends Church in Lewis Center. He donated 375 units of blood to the American Red Cross over his lifetime.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at 11:30 am at Orange Friends Church, 3460 East Orange Road, Lewis Center Ohio. Family will receive friends beginning at 10 am. Private interment will take place at a later time.

Historical Marker Dedication Ceremony Wilmington, Ohio

The Buckeye Chapter - SFA Chapter 45 participated in the dedication ceremony of the Historical Marker for the 1964 mid-air collision of two Air Force C-119 aircraft during an airborne operation with 2nd Special Forces Group. Over 300 great Americans attended the ceremony which was MC'ed by chapter member SGM(R) Bob Lucas. BG(R) Mark Arnold was the guest speaker and chapter member MSG(R) Dan Hessler provided the invocation. Vital to the Marker's establishment was chapter member Mike Quinn who donated $1000 for its creation. Mike was part of the investigative team following the accident 54 years ago.

Jonathan E. Chorpenning

CHORPENNING United States Army (retired) Captain Jonathan E. Chorpenning, age 67, of Felicity, Ohio, died Saturday, June 9, 2012 at his residence. He was born March 13, 1945 in Washington, D.C. the son of the late Dr. Frank Chorpenning, Lieutenant Colonel - retired U.S. Army and Annie (Kay) Chorpenning. Captain Chorpenning was a graduate of Marietta High School class of 1963, The Ohio State University in 1969 with a B.S. in Chemistry, a Master in Physics in 1977 with a post grad certification in Public Administration. He entered the military on April 20, 1969 and served with 3/77th Armor Bn, 5th Infantry Div., 2/34th Armor, 4th infantry Div. and 4/7th Cavalry, 2nd Infantry Difc (OCONUS) for thirty-six years and spent twenty-seven of those years with the U.S. Army Special Forces. He also served as a police officer in the Powell, Ohio and Obetz, Ohio police departments and as a Brown County, Ohio Deputy Sheriff. Captain Chorpenning was a retired teacher in the Columbus, Ohio Public School District, retired from the state of Ohio, Department of Veteran Affairs and eventually became the Police Chief at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, Ohio. He was then Project Manager for design and construction of the Ohio Veterans Home in Georgetown, Ohio, from which he retired in 2010. He was a life member of the Ohio Gun Collectors Association for over forty-five years, and served as Director and as Trustee for of the OGCA Civil Defense Fund. With so many continuous and successful years of service to the OGCA it was fitting that the title of Director Emeritus was bestowed upon him. Captain Chorpenning is survived by his wife, Laura (Andres) Chorpenning; five daughters, Julie (Hank) Arens of Union, Kentucky, Jennifer Irwin and husband, David of Bexley, Ohio, Megan Chorpenning of Columbus, Ohio, Kelly Adam of Milford, Ohio and Amy Adam of Georgetown, Ohio; one adopted son, Kevin Harlan of Atlanta, Georgia; three grandchildren, Matthew and Andrew Irwin and Jonathan Arens; three sisters, Anne Kay Coffey and husband, Ralph of St. Augustine, Florida, Kathleen Row and husband, David of New York, New York and Janie Aziz of Cairo, Egypt; and many nieces, nephews extended family, friends and beloved pets.
